A Close Look in at Scoochie Smith - What is He Stacking?
Dayshon "Scoochie" Smith wears the #11 for the Dayton Flyers and one has to wonder if he chose that number to represent his consistent double-digit scoring or because 11 is known as a "master number" - a double-digit number which also comes from a single root number. Whatever the case, the 6-2 point guard from Bronx, NY is the clear representation of a New York guard. If you see Scoochie drive to the rack, do not necessarily expect the silkiest layup but expect a hard-nosed, rugged drive for the score. On numerous occasions, commentators have screamed in praise of Smith's drives to the hoop.
In my personal experience, I saw Scoochie Smith thread the needle and score in between three Rhode Island defenders in an insane and-one layup right before halftime when Dayton played URI on February 12, 2016. On the very same night, Dayton's point guard stopped on a dime and broke a defender's ankles and all you could hear from the Rhode Island student crowd was "OOOOOOO". When the student crowd of the home, opposing college basketball team is acknowledging and praising your plays on the court, you are doing something right.
If Scoochie Smith was not a tough enough adversary on the road for his opposition, he can excel at another level within his friendly confines of UD Arena. For instance, Dayton's #11 dropped his career-high of 29 points in a pivotal matchup against VCU on March 5, 2016. Additionally, he posted his career-high in a single of assists when he accumulated 11 assists against the eventual Atlantic 10 champions, the Saint Joseph's Hawks, on March 12, 2016 in the Barclays Center. Time and again, we have all witnessed why ESPN ranked Smith as the fifth best player out of the state of New York for the class of 2013. As a part of the winningest class in Dayton history, Scoochie Smith has been at the forefront of the charge in his time as team captain.
Perfect attendance in school is just as important as perfect attendance is in college basketball. According to past records, Scoochie Smith played in all 37 of Dayton's games as a freshman, started in all 36 games for the Flyers his sophomore season, and started all 33 games for the Flyers during his junior season. This is quite the feat considering the way that Smith plays and the sheer brutality that can be inflicted over the course of a college basketball season.
He has made a lot of #RhodeKill in his time with Dayton, too many times for my liking when playing at the Ryan Center in Kingston, RI. With that said, the Atlantic 10 men's basketball conference will severely miss the talents of Dayshon Smith. Ideally, coaches want all of their guards to have the confidence that Scoochie Smith has in the big moments and when driving the lane. Archie Miller has had no issue with giving #11 the keys to the Dayton car and he enables the New York native to operate freely because of the faith that he has in him. College basketball is not a game for the weak and for the Dayton Flyers, Smith always brings the mental strength and physical toughness.
I think we have all learned after four years of watching him play for the Dayton Flyers that Scoochie Smith is stacking wins (@scoochstackin).
