Recruiting Winners - "Fatts" is Coming to Kingston, RI
Rhode Island's lone class of 2017 recruit, Daron Russell, has had himself quite the senior season in high school and his arrival to Kingston, Rhode Island for summer workouts is imminent.
When the 2016-2017 basketball season had begun, Daron "Fatts" Russell declared that he wanted to win EVERYTHING in his senior season. This proclamation was documented around the 4-minute mark of his commitment day video (to Rhode Island):
Making promises are cool but seeing promises through means a whole lot more. "Fatts" essentially promised that he would win every tournament that he played in and he did just that. Check the title really quick for me and validate that second word for me -"Winner(s)". I would say that checks out and here is the proof:
The next time Coach Hurley (who was in attendance at the state championship game) and the Rhode Island faithful sees Daron Russell tearing up near a bench, I expect it to be when URI wins EVERYTHING that they can win - a regular season championship, the Atlantic 10 championship, and of course, the NCAA championship. The video posted below has some of the highlights and postgame celebrations from Russell and Imhotep Charter winning the PIAA Class 4A title.
On a side note, I saw a PC fan on Twitter saying that URI fans are much too excited for a "3-star recruit". That's funny because if I were a Providence Friars fan, I would be more worried about how my team cannot maintain a 17-point lead in the NCAA tournament. I mean that's just me, though. Keep in mind, the Friars blew the 7th largest lead in the history of the NCAA tournament against USC in the "First Four". The Rhode Island faithful will continue to be excited for our recruits, while the Providence faithful can try to teach their team how to not choke massive leads in big games. Also, if I wanted to make this about PC's struggles, I would talk about how Villanova is PC's daddy or how PC lost in their first game of the Big East tournament to Creighton (while URI won the entire Atlantic 10 tournament and beat Creighton in the NCAA tournament). Plus, this "3-star recruit" is about to make the next four years a living nightmare for PC fans.
Anyone remember when I mentioned Russell's "Philly toughness" previously? Be ready, Rhode Island, Fatts is on his way!
