An Introduction to Rhody MBB Assistant Coach Tyron Boswell
On September 12, 2013, it was rumored that Dan Hurley had given Tyron Boswell a call about joining his coaching staff. While there was speculation that Boswell's hiring would lead to the commitment of top-100 prospect Jared Terrell, the shooting guard from Weymouth, Massachusetts eventually committed to Rhode Island on May 16, 2014. Although, Boswell's role with the well renowned Expressions Elite youth basketball program seemed to be the link to essentially guarantee that Jared Terrell would commit to URI. Before Terrell's commitment to the Rams, Boswell was never added to the Rhody MBB coaching staff. Subsequently, the potential inquiry never amounted into anything substantial. Following all of this, Boswell's reactions on Twitter to supposedly not being hired Dan Hurley may never be forgotten.
Normally, most sports fans would be hesitant if they saw this kind of controversial talk on a prospective assistant coach's social media account. I may be in the minority but I do not have a big problem with what was said. Anyone that has ever had their time wasted before has gone through this outrage on at least one occasion. One can imagine how this man must have felt if he was truly led on to a fruitful opportunity and then was shunned out at the last moment. Moving beyond speculation and the clear frustration in the tweets, it is apparent that Tyron Boswell is a passionate figure when it comes to the game of basketball. If that passion is directed in the right place, his career and the program that he works with will benefit greatly.
Roughly three years after the rumored depravity, Tyron Boswell was introduced as the director of basketball operations for URI men's basketball. Coincidence or not, with Boswell's help, URI won the 2017 Atlantic 10 championship and made it into the Round of 32 of the 2017 NCAA tournament.
Given his influence and improvements that he made with Terrell, Ricky Ledo, Alex Oriahki, and many others, Boswell can bring a boost in player development to the Rhode Island Rams. With an expanded role, the Massachusetts native can aid in the progression of talented underclassmen like Daron "Fatts" Russell, Michael Layssard Jr, and Michael Tertsea.
All of URI men's basketball fans can see that Boswell is a teacher of the game, based on this YouTube video he made of showing how to do a crossover in basketball.
I will be very interested to see how Boswell fills the shoes of Jim Carr.
