Improvements That Each 2017-2018 Rhody MBB Player Needs to Make

I have assembled a list for the improvements that every player on the 2017-2018 Rhody MBB roster needs to make. If the majority of these improvements are made, I easily see an Atlantic 10 regular season banner, another Atlantic 10 championship trophy, and a deep run through March Madness in the sights of the Rhode Island Rams. (This article was started on September 13, 2017 and it has been periodically revised ever since.)

Cyril Langevine

  • After securing rebounds right under the hoop, pass the ball out, instead of throwing up a wild and ugly layup or shot.

  • Increase shooting range

  • Improve free throw shooting

  • Stop getting in foul trouble

  • If he keeps complaining to the referees after every foul call, they will not be afraid to give him a technical foul

Andre Berry

  • Do not put the weight back on (I'm serious). I want Berry to have fun in his final season of college basketball and that will only happen if he is playing throughout the season. Knowing Dan Hurley's ideologies, I know that if #34 is not in the right shape to be defending opposing big men, he will ride the pine like he did for the majority of last season.

  • Keep improving defensively

  • Box out on rebounds, don't rely too much on using height and weight to secure rebounds

Stanford Robinson

  • Nail down a consistent jumper and free throw shot

  • Everyone outside of Rhode Island believes that Robinson's remarkable performance against Oregon in the 2017 NCAA tournament was a fluke and for the most part, he has been proving that it was just reality. We all know he has the talent, he just has to put it all together on a consistent basis.

Jeff Dowtin

  • (This seems like a common improvement that needs to be made) Nail down a consistent jumper and free throw shot

E.C. Matthews

  • Play like how he played throughout the entire 2017 Atlantic 10 tournament

  • Find the clutch gene that he has lacked throughout the majority of his career at URI - Successes: against Cincinnati as a junior (HOF Tip-Off tournament), against VCU as a junior (2017 Atlantic 10 championship game) Failures: versus PC as a freshman, at PC as a junior, at Dayton as a junior, versus Dayton as a junior, against Oregon as a junior (2017 NCAA tournament)

  • Improve three-point shooting accuracy (the "star" player should not have the third least shooting percentage from beyond the arc)

Jared Terrell

  • Do not be lackadaisical on the offensive end (i.e. standing in the corner and not moving during offensive possessions)

Jarvis Garrett

  • Do not get injured (literally), #1 of URI has had an injury-riddled career but he is effective when healthy

  • Nail down a consistent jumper

  • Defend with maximum intensity so he doesn't lose out on too many minutes

Nicola Akele

  • Gain way more muscle and man up in the paint, he has been getting bullied in the paint since Ben Bentil embarrassed him in the Ryan Center in 2015

  • Never do what he did in six minutes of play against Oregon in the 2017 NCAA tournament - possibly the worst stretch of play I have ever seen in my life. I will never forget someone from Oregon ripping the ball out of Akele's hands and getting an easy layup off of that steal.

Daron Russell

  • Simply learn how to defend against bigger guards - in certain situations, he will be the equivalent of Isaiah Thomas and Stephen Curry trying to defend bigger guards in the NBA.

  • Do not fall in love with taking too many jumpers from beyond the arc

Ryan Preston

  • Preston is already a multi-faceted player so just sharpen each aspect of his game

  • Nail down a consistent mid-range jumper to expand offensive game

Michael Layssard Jr.

  • Develop a more consistent post game

  • Improve conditioning to defend better and to convince Dan Hurley to give him more playing time (Hurley loves to play quick on both ends)

Michael Tertsea

  • Improve conditioning (lateral movements) and physicality to become a defensive juggernaut in the paint

Christion Thompson

  • Turn the ball over less (turned the ball over too much at Duquesne on 1/21/17)

  • Run to the pass and do not just wait for the ball to arrive

About a URI Attendee

Hi, I attend URI basketball games religiously. I am also a pessimist. These 2 facts do not always mix cohesively. Read my articles to see why.
