After URI's 81-68 victory at VCU, these are some key takeaways from the game.
1. Cyril Langevine can be a true X-factor off of the bench.
Cyril Langevine played his best game of the season by far. The East Orange native had a dominant 12 points and 18 rebounds. Overall, the most impressive parts of his performance were his rebounding, his efficient scoring (5-6 FG), and the energy that he brought off of the bench. As previously mentioned, Langevine has the talent to put on performances such as this one but he needs to display it consistently.
2. URI's ability to close out games has improved greatly.
With the Rhody Rams leading 71-64 with just under four minutes left in the game and the "HAVOC" getting rowdy, Dan Hurley's team stepped up to the plate and closed the game out effectively. In past seasons, there would be a significant possibility that URI would choke a late lead in an important game away. The 2017-2018 iteration of Rhody MBB has appeared to overcome that obstacle.
3. Stanford Robinson continues to be URI's ultimate utility man.
While not shooting particularly well from the field (3-9 FG), Stanford Robinson contributed to URI's win in numerous ways. In addition to scoring nine points, #13 of Rhode Island brought in five rebounds (three offensive), dished out five assists, and snatched SIX steals. Robinson affected the game in several ways and effectively bothered what VCU wanted to do all night.
4. Daron Russell has not disappeared on the offensive end folks.
Ever since his masterful performances vs. Brown and vs. Providence, Daron "Fatts" Russell has been pretty hit-or-miss on the offensive end. In 17 minutes of playing time at VCU, Russell picked his spots much better. On his way to scoring 11 points on 4-9 FG shooting and 3-5 3PT shooting, he delivered a huge three-pointer to put URI up 69-58 with just over six minutes of game time left.
A 19-3 overall record and a 11-0 start in Atlantic 10 play? I'll take that.
