How Family Recruiting Affects Rhode Island MBB
Rhode Island men's basketball has been the beneficiary of recruiting through some family bloodlines to attain success on the basketball court. Recruiting members of a family in an effort to be a part of the Rhode Island basketball program could continue to be a trend for Dan Hurley and his coaching staff.
When Daron "Fatts" Russell chose to commit to Rhode Island, he made it clear to the media that he had the full support of his older brother, DeWayne Russell. Although his elder brother attended and played for Grand Canyon's men's basketball team, "Fatts" committed to the Rhode Island program and his big brother still supported his decision. In an interview with Daron Russell's mother, Terri Sutton, she said that her history with the recruitment of her oldest son helped her when it came to aiding Daron Russell in committing to Rhode Island.
In recent history, Brendan Adams (the brother of Jaylen Adams) committed to Rhode Island. After speaking to his mother, Yolanda Adams, I was told that Dan Hurley and the Rams' coaching staff made sure to talk to Brendan's older brother during the recruiting process. Consequently, the Atlantic 10 leaders were able to secure the services of Brendan Adams in the first week of October 2017.
Going forward, URI would be thrilled to add Malik Martin or Daman Tate to their team, in the near future. Malik Martin is the younger brother of recent URI graduate, Hassan Martin. Daman Tate is the younger brother of recent URI commit, Dana Tate. In the picture that is directly to the bottom right of this text, one can see Daman Tate celebrating his big brother's commitment to Rhode Island MBB.
There is nothing wrong with bringing in talented college basketball players into the Rhode Island men's basketball family.
