Initial Reactions to Omar Silverio's Commitment
David Cox and his coaching staff are quickly back to work, as they secured the commitment of Omar Silverio, a combo guard from Bronx, NY. Following his release from his initial commitment to Santa Clara, the guard committed to URI after being recruited by the Rams, Atlantic 10 rivals Saint Bonaventure and Dayton, as well as Hofstra and San Jose. During his official visit on April 19, 2018, Silverio picked Rhode Island to be his home for the foreseeable future.
First of all, Omar Silverio is a shooter that I would label as a shooting guard if I were to pick a single position to label him by. Rhody MBB has the point guard that they need to set the table on a nightly basis in Jeff Dowtin but they will need as much scoring help as they can get with the upcoming graduation of their five-man senior class. The additions of Tyrese Martin and Omar Silverio should help to make up for some of the lost scoring from the backcourt. Silverio could definitely see playing time in the 2018-2019 season because Jeff Dowtin and Daron "Fatts" Russell are the only guards that I would deem as locks to play consistently. Aside from those two aforementioned players, it could be an open competition between Martin, Silverio, Christion Thompson, and possibly another guard that URI uses their last scholarship on, to battle it out for minutes.
Listed below, you can see exhibit A of the Dominican Republic native's shooting ability. In this game, I observe solid mechanics in his jump shot and his capability of playing to the crowd's support. With the way that the Ryan Center was during last season, satisfying the home fans was shown to have a profound effect on the Rhody Rams.
As will be the case the summer, Silverio will have ample work that he needs to put in during the team's lifting and workout sessions. Accordingly, Saint Raymond's already started the two guard on a similar routine in the past.
In the case of Omar Silverio and a good amount of recent Rhode Island MBB recruits, the hope is always that these high school basketball players were slept on because of the relatively small schools that they played at. In recent memory, Silverio has comparable aspects of his high school basketball program to Christion Thompson.
This is a solid late addition to the team by URI.
