The NBA Teams That Messed Up and Passed on Jared Terrell in the 2018 NBA Draft
It was no surprise that Rhode Island MBB's Jared Terrell needed to be drafted in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft if he was going to be drafted, at all. The following list of NBA teams shows each of the franchises that had Terrell work out for them this summer but passed on him in the draft, and how they each made a major mistake in doing so.
Detroit Pistons (pick #42) - Selected Bruce Brown Jr. from Miami Fl.
How they messed up: Unlike Jared Terrell, the Pistons' second-round pick showed that he could be an injury risk after he missed six weeks with a foot injury last season. Meanwhile, Terrell was one of the most durable players in ALL of college basketball throughout his entire career at Rhode Island. Comparing statistics from last season, Brown Jr. shot just 26.7% from beyond the arc and 62.9% from the charity stripe, while Terrell shot 41.4% from the perimeter and 82.1% from the charity stripe (both career highs).
Charlotte Hornets (pick #45) - Selected Hamidou Diallo from Kentucky
How they messed up: Did the Charlotte Hornets watch Kentucky basketball at all last season or were they too busy losing (36-46 record last season)? Hamidou Diallo is one of the most overrated draft prospects and his decision-making was so bad last season that he was benched and publicly criticized by John Calipari, for his refusal to not shoot perimeter jumpers (33.8% 3PT).
Los Angeles Lakers (pick #47) - Selected Svi Mykhailiuk from Kansas
How they messed up: As big of a Kansas Jayhawks MBB fan that I have always been, I know each of the players' strengths and weaknesses. Mykhailiuk is a strong shooter from outside and at the free throw line but he is practically a one-dimensional player and he is not what this Lakers team needs. The Lakers need guys that can play on both ends of the floor and Terrell fits that description. He could have helped a team that relied on Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (currently a free agent) and Josh Hart at shooting guard throughout last season.
Minnesota Timberwolves (pick #48) - Selected Keita Bates-Diop from Ohio State
How they messed up: The Timberwolves are going to struggle to find the money to resign Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns and Jimmy Butler to remain relevant in the Western conference. Meanwhile, there have been multiple rumors that Towns and Butler both want to be traded. In the likely scenario that Minnesota is not able to keep all three of their young stars in the long run, they need more pieces to rebuild their team. They could have easily traded down for two second-round picks and taken Terrell with one of them.
Charlotte Hornets (pick #55) - Selected Arnoldas Kulboka (International)
How they messed up: I could pretty much copy and paste what I wrote for the Lakers messed up right here. Kulboka is a pure shooter and his defense and rebounding as a small forward is mediocre. Terrell could have contributed in many areas of the game for a team that has an injury risk in Nicolas Batum as their starting shooting guard and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (with one of the worst-looking jump shots) as their starting small forward. Nice try Charlotte but you messed up.
For this entire list of teams, they will regret their draft decisions soon enough.
